Unlocking Global Climate Finance: A Four-Day Training Workshop in Dhaka

A four-day training workshop on “Global Climate Finance Architectures” was held from 15 to 18 January 2025 at BRAC CDM, Savar, Dhaka organized jointly by the Economic Relations Division (ERD) and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3ER) and Natural Conservation and Management (NACOM). The training workshop aimed to enhance the capacity of government stakeholders to access and manage climate finance effectively. 

The workshop brought together 54 participants, specifically from the Economic Relations Division (ERD), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), and climate change related other ministries and departments; non-governmental organizations; financial institutions; and academia, etc., fostering a diverse and collaborative learning environment. Additionally, the workshop included comprehensive modules on critical topics such as- 1) Global and local climate finance architectures; 2) The role of ERD in climate finance; 3) Accessing major funding mechanisms, including the Green Climate Fund (GCF), 4) Global Environment Facility (GEF), Adaptation Fund, and Climate Investment Fund (CIF); 5) Loss and Damage (L&D) and Navigating the Adaptation Fund and 6) Mobilizing Private Sector Climate Finance.

The workshop was featured by the distinguished Guests, who reinforced the critical role of collaboration in addressing climate finance challenges:

– Opening Remarks-Ms. Roufa Khanum, Assistant Director at C3ER, BRAC University, stressed the urgent need for sustainable financial solutions to combat the severe impacts of climate change in Bangladesh.

– Welcome Address -Mr. Arif M Faisal, Programme Specialist at UNDP, called on participants to streamline fund approval processes and ensure the efficient use of resources for impactful climate action.

– Special Guest-Dr. Munjurul Hannan Khan, Executive Director of NACOM, underscored the significance of capacity-building programs to address challenges in accessing climate finance.

– Chief Guest-Mr. A K M Sohel, Additional Secretary and Wing Chief of the UN Wing at ERD, emphasized the importance of securing and efficiently utilizing climate finance, highlighting the need to integrate gender considerations into funding strategies.
