Mr. Mohaimin-ul-Kabir, Anthropologist at the Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3ER), BRAC University, participated in the Annual Community of Practice (CoP) Network Convention 2024, organized by Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) on October 6, 2024. The convention, themed “Strengthening Women’s Leadership in Climate Resilience and Action,” was attended by over 100 participants from NGOs, INGOs, civil society organizations (CSOs), and academia. The event’s Chief Guest, Ms. Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC), highlighted the disproportionate impact of climate change on women, emphasizing the critical role they play as primary caregivers in disaster situations.
Ms. Shaheen Anam, Executive Director of MJF, chaired the event, welcoming participants and introducing the Women’s Climate Action Network (WCAN), a coalition of 100 CSOs from EmPower Project areas such as Jamalpur, Khulna, Kurigram, Satkhira, and Cox’s Bazar. Ms. Nasrin Ahmed, Programme Manager of the EmPower Project at MJF, presented an overview of the project’s Phase II, which aims to strengthen women’s leadership in climate action and decision-making while also addressing gender-based violence (GBV) in the context of climate change and disaster response.
The convention featured a thematic session titled “Localized Impacts of Climate Change: A Comprehensive Gender Insight” led by Md. Ahsanul Wahed, Climate Change Specialist of the EmPower Project.
A Pre-COP 29 session with CSOs, ICCCAD, and UN Women was also held. Awards were presented to five exemplary women-led climate change adaptation initiatives, recognized as the best community schemes of climate adaptation. Notable attendees included Ms. Gitanjali Singh, UN Women Representative in Bangladesh, and Ms. Maria Stridsman, Head of Development Cooperation at the Embassy of Sweden.
